Well, NWR4 has been stalled, mostly because of $$$ problems. I've drained my savings, and don't have any income aside from what keeps NWR afloat.

A couple years ago, the majority of my audio gear was stolen, and that's part of the reason I haven't done any broadcasts in quite some time.

So, here's the deal, if any of y'all have audio gear to spare, or computer hardware, and would be willing to donate it to the indie cause, get in touch with me.

What is needed at the very least:
Decent broadcast quality microphone (preferably a condenser)
Suitable pre-amp for the microphone (48V Phantom power needed)
Spit screen
10-16 foot cable for mic
Desk stand for mic
4-8 channel mixing board
Stand alone CD player
Spare mics + cables for guests

Computer hardware:
[s]ATX Case[/s]
[s]400MHz CPU + board or better[/s]
[s]32MB PC-66/100 ram or better[/s]
10-80GB HDDs
CD Burner
[s]10/100BT NICs[/s]
Decent sound cards (multiple inputs prefered)

In exchange, advertising for your audio related business both on air, and on the site, or access to services that I provide through my companies. Get in touch and we'll discuss it.

UPDATE: I'll cross out things as I either recieve them, or someone mentions they'll be sending them.

Monetary donations are accepted as well, you can donate via. paypal at http://nowhereradio.com/about or from your artists administration page.

If you want to send a cheque or money order, please e-mail me.

[s]A rough guess of the total required to cover line upgrades and the new server:

 $2880 -> Line upgrades
 $1900 -> Server

The computer components listed above are not listed in this, as they're for the broadcast machine.[/s]

So far, only ONE Person has donated: ME

And only ONE other person has offered to donate, but nothing has been recieved yet.

Seems it's a lost cause?  All those thousands of users don't have a use for NWR and don't care about it?

Three months free with a six month contract or something.
And everyone who is free now has three months to sign up.

When I first used Nowhere for free and Waldo said he needed people to pay,it was a no brainer.
For what you get it is well worth the $15,just look at the other choices out there.
And considering the price of setting up a studio,$15 isn't even the tax on a good mic cable!

I just think a lot more people would join up,verses donations.
And people who are serious about there music won't have to look elsewhere.

I usually wouldn't put my 2 cents in,but I'd really hate to see Nowhere go down.
It's the best deal going!

(check out my comment on 1-15-2001 - "how long can you keep it up for free....especially when everyone is starting to charge and people are flocking to "that free site".....bandwidth has to give out sooner or later....."

I am a firm supporter of NWR...Ive even suggesting doing the second HR.COM Comp CD through NWR.....but i think it sucks that paying memeber's site performance may be being hindered by all the "freebies" taking up bandwidth....Im sure there are more $$$ issues that need to be addressed, but going more pay based could ease up the problem a tad....many people like to stream and streaming just isnt possible lately and i have a high speed cable modem......

I gave up on ArtistLaunch.com because they closed thier site for a few weeks to upgrade....i wont give up on Waldo that easy because I like the guy:) I will continue to stand buy him and offer any suggestions that may help him.....

MIKE
Gidgemo's suggestions were one that helped keep NWR going for yet another year in it's close to 5 year survival game...

The biggest concern with going 'all' pay however, is that it will kill almost 'all' traffic on NWR...

The solution(s) that has been devised to prevent 'paying' members from being downed by the 'free' members, is to

1) have a separate line connected to a separate server, where the pay users data is stored.  This is one of the reasons I listed a new server and line upgrades.

2) NWR4 will come with a new P2P application which members can install, and get faster downloads with, as the bandwidth would be shared amongst members.  This is optional of course, but will take a major load off of the lines.

3) Streams will be limited to 128kbps or 96kbps, as the majority of internet connections out there cannot handle higher, and people trying loads down the lines so that others who can handle it cannot connect.  Downloads will of course remain the original uploaded mp3, providing the mp3 is valid of course, for pay accounts.  Free accounts will be restricted to 128kbps max.

4) Added support for uploading WMA, RA, and OGG formats which sometimes can have lower file size, will help lower bandwidth.

5) The advanced collaboration application (yes, I'm leaking a secret), similar to RocketNetworks, only easier and cheaper, will help fund improvements on NWR. (StudioNoWhere)

6) The new 'full color' CD package, and a much cheaper b&w 'econo' print CD package will hopefully encourage CD sales.  Maybe some, or at least ONE of you guys will buy someone else's CD and support them as well as NWR, lol

7) The new integrated forums will encourage people to post a bit more, hopefully, and thus increase ad revenue to help fund NWR.

8 ) The new upgrades will also affect NoWhereHosting, giving more flexibility on the packages, more features, and hopefully encouraging more people to sign up for the packages.  Automated signup and credit card processing will also be included.  This will help fund NWR.

9) Hopefully, the added exposure on NWR, and increased traffic, will encourage better paying advertisers...

10) A new 'comparison shop' type application is in development, wherein you can search for a product/component through NWR, and find the best price on a number of online shops.  When a purchase is made, a commission is earned.

11) The affiliate program will be complete, and hopefully will encourage more signups, as referrals will earn income for the referrer.

12) Project 'everywhere' is not far off, hopefully income will come from this.  Still hush hush, we don't want the majors to catch on to this idea.

13) The radio stations will contain a few audio ads, which will bring in income to support NWR.  Of course, the stations will only re-open when certain needs have been met.

Anyways, you get the idea, the plans are in place, but certain things are required before the plans can go into action.

Right now, the next step for most of these things (#3 -#5 possibly, #6 - #9,  #11) to be completed, is about $450 USD in cash, and about a months worth of work once the required components and software is purchased.  That's about 17 new 1 year iSpace signups.

#1, relies almost entirely on cash, thus the second post.  These numbers may change over time as I work other jobs to find money, and put together deals with companies to provide things, or get discounts, etc.

#2, relies on a little bit of money, and alot of free time on my part.  I've got the application started, but need more free time to finish it.  Free time is hard to find when you are unemployed and hunting for scarce work!

#10 relies on companies with open minds, and time on my part.  Providing I can afford to spend the time on it, it'll happen.

#13 relies on the very first post here, about equiptment.  I'm sure that at least a couple of the several thousand artists on NWR have some of this stuff laying around, and might want to help out.

Anyways, your thoughts, suggestions, etc. PLEASE POST THEM, don't just lurk in the darkness, I am, afterall, doing this for you!

One thing I'm thinking about--and I know it's not "gear needed" related...

Genres need to be expanded, with possibly 3 sub-level genres in each main. Something like what mp3.com has done.

Garageband.com is more "rock" music related than not, but it's also a good example of genres to include.

If I weren't digging myself out from under some debt, i could donate... tho I did sign up for the year a few weeks back.

I am experienced in Perl/CGI -- I ran a huge fan site for The Simpsons for about 3 years (DHTML/dynamic content/multimedia) so if there's any programming you need done, give me a shout. I can also do C, C++, Java, etc... (been doing it for nearly 25 years) I'm sure PHP wouldn't take more than a few hours to pick up (mostly syntax issues)... I learned Perl in less than a day.

I could help that way, at least  :P

I just noticed #2...

Are you doing that as a C++ project, perchance?

I have Visual C++ 6.0, and am about an inch from buying .net at my huge student discount.

I'm familiar with/have used design patterns, as well as refactoring (attempting to write bullet-proof code) so no worries on the neatness or overall design.

Send me some diagrams or something, with the interfaces you need and I'll write the classes... (the grunt stuff... as I'm not very familiar with networking/TCP/IP etc...)

Over 100 genres are in NWR4, this is already taken care of.

I do need volunteers to help with code, on many fronts, but it is hard to find anybody, as volunteers I've had in the past have offered to do things, and months pass with no results....

Coders are needed, but the applications are extremely TCP laden.  I don't do charts or diagrams, as I'm a one man team, and have been working as a one man team for 15 years.  Some of the core components of the applications are in C++, and the visual interfaces were done in VB for one reason, speed (I hate the VC6 IDE, looks better in .NET but haven't used it much).  That is speed in coding of course.  Plans are to port them completely over to C++ eventually, as I get time.

I have both VS6.0 and VS.NET enterprise editions.  Back end code is done in PHP, and Perl/CGI.  Database is mySQL, platform is *nix.  To learn PHP with a background in Perl and C is no trouble at all,  just use the doc as a reference every now and then.

If you've got msnim, look me up sometime, or e-mail me to remind me to turn it on.  I could definately put you on a project or two if you are willing to commit to a deadline.

UPDATE:

About $85USD has been raised so far.

The ULTIMATE solution would be to have $2600 USD total, since I've been able to work out a deal for new (MUCH faster) lines, new servers (except a WMS box), and everything else needed to keep NWR swinging hard.  Believe it or not, that amount of money (combined with current monthly income) should keep NWR running for a whole year!

Update: We're at about $200 now, so almost 10% of the way there.

I've also got some misc. computer parts on the way, so that 'might' take care of the broadcast machine.

I just signed up for a year.Every little bit counts I guess.....Crawdad is sending me a couple of CD's of his music and he asked me to send my money your way instead of paying him anything.......looking forward to another YEAR of nowhereradio. ;D

Well thanks to you, and many others, we're over $300USD raised, so well on our way to the new servers/lines.

I've worked out a deal with the provider, and if I can raise about $400USD more, then we're covered for the next 6 months (including upgrades).  We'll get a better deal if I can front the whole year of course, but can get by with half.

So, technically, we're almost half way there!

Just over $400USD raised now, at this rate, we should have all the cash needed by the end of March.  Keep it coming folks!

$350 USD left until the server switch can be started!!

The next 'goal' after that occurs would be about $1800USD to cover plans for NWR4, after that, we should be set for at least a year, and NWR might even be fully self-sufficient by that time (my fingers are crossed).
