Looks like we may be shut down...

It appears those providing the bandwidth for the downloads and streams think we are using too much bandwidth....  (I checked the contract, and, yep, we are above their proclaimed limit)

So, the option would be to change providers.  Unfortuneatly, that means a minimum extra $200 a month....  Which, I cannot afford as I don't have enough income at the moment.

I've paid the bills off (thanks to help from the others) until March 31st, all streams, artist uploads/etc. should remain online until that point.

The following will disappear unless some miracle happens, or I find a way to continue:

Uploads/ downloads/ streams/ artist configurations/ charts/ forums/ chat/ logins, etc.

The central site will remain up, and I'll still be able to sell CDs through the site, and have the artist pages online, etc., but that's all.

If anybody out there can think of a possible solution, contact me.

My deepest appologies to all, I really, really wanted things to continue to grow as they still are at this point...

Only one solution...  Charge us!

bummer. How about govt grant or something? is this a not for profit venture or were you planning on making $$ here? I don't even have a clue Waldo except try to sell more ads, have members pony up a few bucks each but, the greatest thing about this site is that it's free. It stinks that a good portion of the professional and novice people that use this site, can spend thousands on equipment but have a hard time writing a check for 10 or 20 bucks so thier music is available to others.

Could you merge with another service similar to yours?

I was checking out a site called  nowRECORDING.com, i posted something there quite a few weeks ago (on thier bbs) and the place is a ghost town. They encourage collaboration with others and provide a place to post music but i never posted any tunes there.

good luck waldo.

I've looked at such options Charvster, none have worked to this point...  Merging is out of the question, simply because I don't want things to happen like they have to so many other sites, where the major industry gets a piece and takes over...

Advertising is good and all, but doesn't cover all the bills.  Two years ago the ad market was great, you could charge enough and even make a good profit from ad space, but now, it's a pretty desolate market.  Where I used to pull in $1-$5 a CPM, I can only charge about $0.50 a CPM to be competitive.

It originally started out as a 'not-for-profit' venture, but I think it's going to have to become a business to survive.  In the past, I was able to set up with other companies offering free services, package them so that they were easy to use, and offer them for free, but then all those companies either disappeared, or became charge only...

I've come up with a few ideas in the past couple hours, and have started working on them.

I think the best way to solve the issue is to offer space for free, say enough for one or two songs, and for the artists page.  More space, and added features however are optional, with a charge that covers the expense.  And maybe have a cap on the bandwidth, being as that is the biggest expense right now.  Plus, offering the most flexibility, and best service possible, being as the intent isn't to make a mint off you, just enough to keep NWR running....

See, NWR is my dream...  Keeping the independent industry alive, and helping it grow...  I'd like to see the industry take the step into the forefront, and I'll do anything and everything possible to make it happen.

If I set rates at, lets say, $2-3 a month, for unlimitted mp3 storage space and 1GB of bandwidth a month, and made it a 'pay for 6 mo.' or 'pay for 1 year' deal only, and I had 10-15 artists pay for a year in the first month, I'd be able to upgrade the lines and cover the expense for a month, after that, to keep running, we would require 10-15 more artists signing each month, to cover that months expenses.  Around 150-200 artists paying for a year, would cover the expenses for a year.  Anything above and beyond that would go into expansion, and the added expense of more artists.  We could even work out 'ad free' service, where the ads are removed from your page for about $6 a month, and fully customizable sites for somewhere around $10 a month (you design, no NWR ads and such).

And then I could add on an 'affiliate' program, as I had planned for the CD program, where you 'recruit' an artist, and get a cut... Giving insentive for people to refer the service, growing the content and exposure for all of us...

What do you think?  More thoughts ideas?  Everything is welcome.

Welp, looks like I'm not welcome to post over at HomeRec, last few posts I've made, if they have anything to do with NWR, have been deleted...

I mean, it's not spam, I ain't posting the address there, only people who know me know what I'm talking about, it's about music... WHAT THE HELL?

I'm starting to get angry with Dragon over this, I've done nothing but promote his services, and contribute to that community...  I've given his users free bandwidth, and I've advertised his site for free...

Well, it rains, it pours.

Are you serious. you were deleted???

There was no mention of NWR in your posts....  NWR gives HR.COM posters a free quick place to post there stuff...

Theres a chance your gonna go under, and you need advice and it gets deleted....

Sometimes I just want to grab my 9 iron.....   well never mind..

You know, I've emailed Dragon about 3 different times complaining about offensive posting.. I mean really offensive stuff....  I never heard a word back for him, nor was the post deleted or anything....

Now he goes and deletes your post...  You know, that really sucks...

*shakes head*

SUCKS!

You know what.. Im sort of pissed...

Im not gonna rant and rave and say Im never posting there again, cause I like the users and I like the topics......and I will post there

But...

Bet your a$$, Im taking every link and mention of HR.com off my site... I can't endorse a place that operates like that..

It's different if they had a history of deleting threads and other things..

But out of the blue to erase yours, and leave all the other offensive stuff up really angers me.

Ok you guys-----

Now it's time to find out where the bear shits in the
buckwheat......

Firstly, in business it's not unusual for "competitors"
to isolate one of their own when they smell blood...
Happens in the real world--what would make you think
it would be any different on the 'net..A lot easier to
be cutthroat when you never meet others face to face..

Next---This is a business--regardless of the selfless
motivations and good intentions of Waldo and people
like him--(LOrd knows we need more). Operations run
on money and cannot expand without it. I've been
hanging around here for about a month and can
appreciate the amount of effort Waldo and Vox put
out to keep things going..In business there is no such
thing as "staying small"---margins drop constantly on
revenue items meaning that the minute you stop growing you simply cave in under the weight of ever
increasing overhead...

The purpose of this site as I see it is to provide an
oppurtunity to independant musicians to be heard
and maybe even make a living at their craft without
selling out to the majors....It comes down to a fight
about keeping regional cultures alive to some degree..
A noble fight if I've ever seen one..

For this site to be effective, it must have a solid revenue
stream and if we musicians want all the toys, Why
should one individual carry that on his back?????
'Cause he's a good guy???----REminds me of the story
of the little red hen a bit---

Bottom line the site needs product to sell and a member
support structure to operate properly.

I'll be ranting more later....March 31st,eh????

Time to roll up my sleeves.....

Graham..

:D

I found out bout this place at http://pub51.ezboard.com/bchristianmusicianforum
from one of your artists.

I know that there are several people from there putting their music here.

Jump through all the hoops to get signed in there and I would imagine that Brad would be co-oppeative as long as ya don't overdo it. I am an administrator and the moderator of the Guitar Forum there and started the Talent Showcase/Artist Resources Forum. We have a Singer/Songwriter Forum, a Recording Forum, several others.

I Love NWR! If ya wanna charge a few bucks a year, I'm willing. I just don't use Credit Cards and would have to send ya a USPS Money Order. Fact is, email your address and I'll send a little donation to try and help out a little. I know how it is to have dreams crushed, Bro.

Blessings!

I think the ideas are starting to come together, and a feesable plan of action to keep the indie movement growing is forming.

I will be locking this topic so it falls from the top, but if you have any further ideas/suggestions, please post them in the 'suggestion' section of the forum ASAP, so that I can evaluate them and integrate them into the plan.

I wish I could tell you the plan, but it is not entirely formed, and may be risky to make it public, as there is alot of major industry folk out there who would love to get their hands on this stuff. ;)

Thanks for all your valuable contributions, NWR will NOT die without a fight.
