Title: How NOT to get help
Post by: TheRealWaldo on June 13, 2006, 10:37:32 PM
This guy posted on another site requesting assistance. From the start I asked that he e-mail for support regarding his account information for security reasons (to protect him, AND his account, if it really is his). He never once sent an email and continued to post at the other site.

Transcript follows: Edited to protect the foolish

----------------------------------------------------------
Hey

Can you please help me. I need the song and lyrics removed from my account...but I can't remember the password, and the email is dead on the acount because it's really old. Anyway, here is my account:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/------------

How can I update the email on the account, because I want to start using it again?

Damn gurls are stalking me via my username. They type it in the search engines..and this is something I would kind of like to keep anyway from them...hehe

Thanks.

--------------------------------------------
Send me an e-mail with your full name, address, phone number, the original email address you signed up with, and what you believe the username to be.

Hey,

The username is --------, the link is right here:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/-----------------

I can't even remember what the email is. I think it might be ----------@------.net or something like that. It's been forever ago and 1 day.

Find the song on that page on this board. You can see the username I am pming from links to that nowhere.com page.

Thanks

--------------------------------------------
For security reasons, I'll need to know what phone number and address you signed up with, also, please send to me via. e-mail, not here (no security in place here).

Hey,

Was the email I gave you, right? I don't even remember putting an address or phone number. I move around so much, I wouldn't have a clue as to what I put down. It might be -----, Fl. With an --- area code on the phone number. That's about all I could say. I'm living in Vegas right now.

Here's the thread where I linked to my nowhere page:

http://homerecording.com/bbs/-------------

You can clearly see, I am PMing you from this same username...that verifies me right there.

Thanks.

---------------------------------------------
Unfortuneatly, it does not, I could easily make a post and link to someone elses page on any public board too. Also, since the city and state of a bands account is public knowledge (displayed on the page), it proves nothing as well. You could also be logging in to someones elses account through this site, by exploiting weaknesses in this sites software (of which there are many). I have absolutely no way of confirming your identity here. People pretending to be other people is a constant problem for NWR.

The ONLY way I can confirm you or your account in any form, is for you to e-mail me, and you'd need to match the information in your account at least slightly. I cannot do anything from requests on this forum, or this private messaging system. Please e-mail me if you wish to discuss this further.

Dude,

Are you being serious? What the fvck is the problem here. I'm not even asking for any info. I said to remove those lyrics and song from my account. The info I gave you is nowhere in public display:

---[a bunch of text copied from a bands biography page here]--

That is my bio on nowhere.com Now where the fvck does it say P-------, --l or --- aread code in display of the public on this site on your site on any site, where does it say that? Was the email address I gave you not correct? Why the fvck are you harassing me like this? You know it's my account. So please stop the conspiracy theories, and tell me how I can get access to my account, or just delete that song and lyrics for me, please.

I have verified my identity. You won't even say if the info I am giving you matches or not.

----------------------------------

Well, I've tried to be nice and clear, but;

PLEASE WRITE ALL FURTHER COMMUNICATIONS IN AN EMAIL, AND INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME, PHONE NUMBER, AND FULL ADDRESS TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE (IF YOU AREN'T SURE, THEN INCLUDE THEM ALL FROM THAT TIME PERIOD). WE WILL ACCEPT NO LESS AND I WILL NOT RESPOND TO ANY REQUESTS OR REPLIES ON THIS SITE.

I CANNOT KEEP ANY LEGAL RECORDS FROM THIS SITE (HR), NOR CAN I KEEP HISTORICAL RECORDS OF ANY SORT. THIS IS NOT MY PLACE OF BUSINESS, NOWHERE IS.

NONE OF THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED IS ACCURATE. NOT EVEN THE USERNAME IS CORRECT. ALL ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AS PER THE USER AGREEMENT. MYSELF EVEN TALKING TO YOU IS FOR YOUR BENEFIT, NOT MINE. BEING BELIGIRANT IS NOT HELPING YOUR CASE.

YOU HAVE ZERO HOPE OF GETTING ANY ACCESS UNLESS ALL FURTHER COMMUNICATION IS VIA. EMAIL.

W.
-------------------------------------------

Man,

IF YOU JUST HAD A FREAKIN LOST PASSWORD LINK ON YOUR SITE LIKE EVERY OTHER G'DAMN SITE IN THE WORLD...I COULD DO THIS MYSELF.

What it is with you...you do realize what you sound like, right? Do you realize this is an internet forum? I think staring at yer computer monitor for so long is starting to melt yer brain.

For christ sake dude. I can't give you any other info by email, other than what I gave you so why do you insist on me using email? It's not like it's gonna give me magical powers and let me remember what I wrote on my profile. I bet there is not even a street address in my profile. ------------@-------.com Is this the email address?

I remember now...I always had a hard damn time loggin into your site...you know WHY!?!?! You are right about one thing. I don't think ------, is the username. It's something else. -------- is the display name, but if the username is something else, than send it to the email on my account...cus I know the password...it's just the username I think I need.

--------------------------------------------------

Does he really think I'm going to respond? He told me in his first message that the email address on the account is no good anymore....

Oh yeah, and BTW, a lost password function ONLY WORKS IF YOU KNOW THE EMAIL ADDRESS OR USERNAME OF THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNT, AND HAVE ACCESS TO THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNT....

My lord, can people really be this slow-witted?

I finally receive an email, coming from a server 2,000 miles from his claimed current location (might mean nothing, but unusual none-the-less), that contains nothing more than this:

--------------------
would you please just email me my dam n username. If it's not ------,
which I think is just the display name...I'm pretty sure I remember the
password, I just need the login.
--------------------
I of course, responded with:

The policy has been outlined to you, we will release no information unless you can prove that the account belongs to you. These accounts can contain confidential information, financial information, and copyright material belonging to the account owner.

1) Passwords are not stored in a retrievable form. They are stored in a non-reversible hash, which is explained on sign up, along with the requirements of you keeping this information, and the responsibilities keeping your account up to date.
2) We require at the very least the name, address and phone number provided on the account. If you are unsure, simply list the places you lived in on the year that you registered.
3) Once that information is compared against what is on file, we can release information on the account, or reset the password, whatever is required.

Dude. No one is getting your e-mail address through a Google search from this forum. It just aint so Joe.

The reason Waldo requested that you correspond your membership details via e-mail is so that he can confirm that you are indeed the owner of that nowhere account.

Additionally, by sending your personal info in an e-mail you are protecting yourself from any further abuse of your personal data (i.e. don't post your personal info on an open forum board). Besides, the info he needs to complete your request, if posted here in the forum, could lead to direct stalking by those "d**n gurls".

I know Waldo. And I know he goes to extreme lengths (in his programing, in his online apps and as a friend) to protect others. He is only looking out for your best interests here.

The next time you sign up for a forum or get an online membership you should record the username, web address, password and membership date in your day timer and store it in a safe place. Don't rely solely on a PDA or other electronic device to store this type of data.

Good luck with getting it sorted out.

Maybe this dude is someone with a grudge against the account holder Waldo.

You certainly can't remove/delete accounts based on a request from an unconfirmed source. That would put Nowhere in legal jeopardy and would set a rather unsavory precedent for the site.
