hey Waldo.. (anyone).
I have problems streaming from this site on my Mac G4/400 running MacOSX. I have Realplayer, MediaPlayer and iTunes. Mp3's pop up in a little player slider when an Mp3 is streamed, normally.
I think I have all the bases covered as I don't have any problems streaming from any other sites.
Windows Media player problems:
Unknown codec reported. (I have had this before with some Windows hogging MPEG's but never with a stream.
Mp3 Streaming
I get the CGI file and it goes to my standard Mp3's streaming but the files are around 5 seconds long in playing time and then start again although the CGI goes up to number two, and so on..
My only option is to download which appears to happen in the browser window (at the bottom of the page when it shows the general activity) but if I try and save the link, I get to download the same problem CGI file.
I would prefer to use the Mp3 streaming (Mp4 preferably) but MediaPlayer would do...
Any ideas..
Cheers
Rimmer
p.s. Just to reiterate. I don't have problems elsewhere and therefore don't wish to adjust my working settings in any way.
Nowhere else streams, they just do DLAPB.
Sounds like your mime types are mucked up, nothing I can tell you to do without changing anything on your end.
W.
I would be prepared to add a MIME setting although, like I said.. I wouldn't want to change the general workings of the machine. I send a lot of people here to create their pages and end up having a bit of a time of it to listen to what they have posted. Some of them seem to restrict download which means I don't get to listen at all.
All the best

It's up to the individual artist to restrict downloads or not. You must be logged in to download 'members only' downloads if they have set it there, and that's logged in to the main website, not the forums. This of course requires you have cookies turned on, and your browser must support standard javascript. There is the option to stop the cookies from expiring so that you remain logged in.
A default installation of any mac os, windows machine, etc. should support the streams by default, only modified (improper) settings will cause them not to function. I suggest you hit the FAQ for proper mime-type settings and compare them to your machine.
I've modified the linking slightly to attempt to 'fake' machines with bad mime-types into recognizing the file type from the extension alone.
Give it a shot now (make sure you refresh the pages), and let me know what happens.

Windows Media player still gives the Unknown File Type. Embedded Mp3 actually does something different now. I get the little progress playback bar and the activity light on the cable modem is full on likes it's downloading BUT, it crashes Internet Explorer or more to the point, I get a spinning beachball (Mac OSX doing things indication) and that's it. I have to crash out of it.
However, I have tried Omniweb (which is almost my default browser) and it works fine. It boots up iTunes rather than an embedded player and plays back well. The thing about iTunes is, it remembers the address and puts it in your playlist which always requires you remember to delete the entry which is a pain in the ass.
Half way there then. I suspect that Explorer is still currently the Mac users reluctant choice of browser so it would be nice if Nowhere worked with the embedded player. Thanks for your time with this.
If you need someone to test out any changes you make on my Mac, feel free to email me and I will give you a report.

P.S., Mac OS 7 + has been tested with IE5 +, and proper mime configuration works flawlessly.
There is no 'embedded' player on NoWhere, so I assume you mean you are using the m3u streaming method.
There is nothing in the script that runs users computer, everything runs user side, so there is NO WAY that any code run on the server can crash your machine. I would suspect you have some severe issues with mime-types, and possibly a corrupted install of IE or WMP.
Ensure that you are clicking on 'Change Player' and setting the stream type to Windows Media Player when you wish to stream via. Windows Media Player. Also ensure that cookies are turned on, or the setting will not be retained.
I run macs here, and myself have never experienced an error with the streaming, and know of several other users that have no issues either.
A perfect indication that you have errors in your mime configurations is that when you switch from one browser to the other, different players pop up.
P.S., you can set iTunes not to add to the play list.
I've taken that all on board. I think the WMP thing is out of my hands. It boots it fine and then says unknown codec.
I will try reinstalling Exploiter and WMP. I think there might be a newer version of WMP anyway..

Well, the WMP streaming server is none other than Microsofts own Windows Media Services, so unless the player's mucked up, it should work without question.
So, the re-install might help, let me know.

I installed OSX version 7.1.3 which is the newest version. I get this exact message when trying to stream Hi or Low band..
Windows Media Player cannot play this file because the Player foes not support this codec
Weird...

Copy the exact link that you are clicking on which brings up the player and thus shows you that error and paste it here so I can look at it.
Okay. I went to a page and picked a random artist. The lucky subject was Brian Kraft and the link is below.
http://media.nowhereradio.com/cgi-bin/playsong/7453/cDe9fqLXHQtRU/n/wmp/symbols.asx
I have tried a couple of times and got the following...
Cannot continue playing file. Invalid or corrupt data was encountered.
I tried this link afterwards and got the above message again.
http://media.nowhereradio.com/cgi-bin/playsong/7452/cDe9fqLXHQtRU/n/wmp/movie2.asx
Media Player booted and gave the 'Connecting' message on the player itself and then the error message.
I hope this helps..

Do your windows media player setting match those listed in the FAQ as defaults?
W.
I don't know where the FAQ's are. I had a look at the preference pane for WMP and there is very few users options. There is a RESET TO DEFAULT button which I pressed (and nothing changed) and that's about it, other than a connection speed selector.
In some ways, I am wondering if it has something to do with MS Explorer as I can stream using iTunes from Omniweb (a really much better browser crippled by MS java attrocities) but not from exploiter. I am not one of those MIME setting people and don't go there unless I have to. I have never played with MIME settings in OSX and always request that new software (quicktime/WMP etc...) leave the original settings alone. Like I have said before, everything works fine elsewhere on the internet so in many ways this is as much to help you get to the bottom of things as it is for me.
I value this site highly in light of the internet music revolution and am here to help you out where ever I can..

Name one site that actually streams and doesn't do DLAPB that works for you, and we'll talk about them, until then, let's check your mime settings like I asked you originally.
As I stated, there is nothing non-functional on the website, with Mac, IE, Windows Media Player or otherwise, I use a Mac, as well as others, and a default installation functions flawlessly with many players.
Go to help from the main website (not the forums), then click on the link point to the list of FAQs, in there you will find 'how to properly configure players', error message solutions, etc.
Also, are you running a software firewall, port-blocker, an external firewall, or running through a proxy? If so, it could very well be that you are blocking standard streaming ports. I'd look into that as well.
Firewall OFF. I do run a webcache proxy with my ISP but it's turned off during testing.
I'll have a look through the help page and see what I can come up with. In the interim, if someone sends me here to have a listen, I will use Omniweb with iTunes as that seems to work..
