Why should people buy music

It seems the only CD's that I am buying these days are old music artists that I want. I can find all the new music on the internet for free(indie and non-indie). The amount of music available to the listener is enormous. From Classical, to Electronic, to African, to Brazilian, etc etc etc . The digital age has changed forever the exchange of music. I have the Nomad mp3 player, and it holds over 150 CD's(5 gigs) worth of music on it. It fits in my hand.  If I press the  play button on it , it will play for two weeks and never hear a song twice.

I know the quality is not the same as a CD, but when the mp3 is played on a good system, they do sound very decent. I also found that the better(mastered) the music is, the better the mp3 sounds. Most professionally Mastered songs sound great as mp3's. I also listen to the Radio a lot, and mp3's played on my Car system sound better than the Radio!!!

Eventually, people will begin to understand.  Making music costs money, it is a very tangible product, and most of is actually 'NEED' music.

i personally have never heard a mp3 that comes close to cd quality.i have d/l some 320 stuff that is much better than the usual 128 but still its not very close to a cd to my ears.
i often d/l a few songs from a particular album to see if its worth buying and i also usually d/l the 2 or 3 songs a week my band works up but d/ling a whole album then burning that to cd for listening does not really cut it.
as far as comparing mp3 to radio broadcast you may have a point there.my local rock station has everything so compressed/limited  it sounds like a diffrent mix

There is also hundreds of other formats, all becoming more popular.  Some are actually capable of 'better' than CD audio encoding.  

The fact remains, the majority of people don't mind a little less 'quality' if they can get it for free.  Even those who say they are avid supporters of the music community are getting what they can, when they can.

Jeza,

I think that's the key.  You give them some free to sample and if they really like it, they will probably buy the CD to get the stuff they can't get for free and the extra quality of the CD.
