Aldon Sanders - Taro Patch Tunes
Aldon Sanders - Taro Patch Tunes
Some of my favorite hymns played Hawaiian Slack Key guitar style.
All arrangements are my own.
Very easy listening.

This is one of those tunes that gets stuck in your head. I end up playing it on any instrument I learn.

The oldest name I could find for the tune is "Terra Beata"
2)   In the Garden  Taro Patch Tunes 3:37 - 5.0MB

According to hymnal 'Great Hymns of the Faith', this melody was originally from a Gregorian chant. I remember playing this tune in 8th grade band (1st chair baritone horn, thank you) where it was credited as a German folk tune. Christians know the song as "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross'. I use a very traditional Hawaiian vamp in this song. I also created a neat little B part to complement this wonderful old tune.
5)   Maori Farewell  Taro Patch Tunes 3:13 - 4.4MB

The oldest reference I could find to this tune refers to it as simply a "Maori melody". It is also known as "Maori Farewell", "Now is the Hour", and "Cleanse Me". When a melody has been used that many times it's an automatic classic....

Although my guitar was tuned to a G major chord, I'm playing this song in G minor. It was a challenge to figure out and I'm very pleased with the results. original title - "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho"
7)   Leaning  Taro Patch Tunes 1:37 - 2.2MB

Read the lyrics in a hymn book or look them up on the internet sometime.....a jaunty, happy tune. original title - "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms"

An old melody, at least 200 years old and counting.

A very old tune. It dates back to 1677. It is my favorite hymn. original title - "Fairest Lord Jesus"
10)   Hawaii Aloha  Taro Patch Tunes 3:31 - 4.8MB

It's in the Hawaiian hymnal -- really. This is the unofficial anthem of the Hawaiian Islands. Most kids in Hawaii know this song before they know the official state song "Hawaii Pono'i" (I still don't know all the words to "Hawaii Pono'i".) This is also the last song sung at gatherings and parties, when people hold hands and get teary-eyed....
11)   Joyful, Joyful  Taro Patch Tunes 3:00 - 4.1MB

This melody comes from Luwig Van Beethoven's 'Ninth Symphony'. I play the melody and alternately repeat it an octave lower. The ending is what I call a disorganized ritardando, somewhat reminiscent of wind chimes in a soft breeze.... original title - "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee"
